Libya shuts 490 petrol stations over fuel-smuggling as interior minister vows crackdown

Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabelsi, who heads the committee tasked with addressing Libya's fuel and gas crisis, said resolving the shortage requires the government, the Interior Ministry, the oil sector, companies, security agencies, regulatory bodies and citizens to work together as a single system.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives of oil companies and committee members, Al-Trabelsi announced the closure of 490 petrol stations that had been used for smuggling operations, as part of a security plan coordinated with security directorates to ensure fuel reaches citizens. Around 365 stations have been approved to continue operating based on actual local needs, he said, adding that decisions on the matter should be left to those with relevant expertise, free from interference by any party.

"Libya's interest must be placed above personal, tribal and regional considerations, and the law must be applied to everyone without exception, interference or pressure," Al-Trabelsi said. He called on cities and regions to support police officers, describing them as "your sons," and said empowering them to carry out their duties was essential to protecting citizens' security and the stability of their areas.
